Pat Hayes, site steward from the Forest Preserves of Cook County FPCC), highlights the wonders of our local Orland Grassland located on 167th Street just west of La Grange Road. Learn how it provides habitat for grassland birds, the most endangered species of birds in North America, and beautiful migrating birds, some recorded at Orland Grassland for the first time. Come away with an overview of the various ecosystems of the site and see captivating visuals of vanishing habitats.
Speaker Bio: Pat Hayes has been the volunteer Site Steward at Orland Grassland since the restoration plan began in 2002. Certified by the Forest Preserves of Cook County (FPCC), she’s served in many capacities including plan implementation, collaborations with restoration partners, leading volunteers in restoration activities, and community outreach. The Orland Grassland comprises 1,000 acres filled with prairie uplands and swales, wetlands, oak savannas, shrubland and woodlands. The site has evolved into a habitat recognized by the National Audubon Society as an “Important Bird Area.”
