Join historian Robert Mueller as he provides a unique view of the great struggles for conquest that occurred there over the past 600 years, starting with the English attempt to claim the throne of France in what became the Hundred Years War to the climactic battles of World War II. Across these battlefields trod some of the best known figures of European history: Kings Edward III and Henry V; Jeanne d'Arc; Waterloo's Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington; the two World Wars' greatest generals: Joffre, Foch, Haig, Pershing, Ludendorff, Rommel, Guderian, Patton, Montgomery, and Eisenhower. Place names became synonymous with tragedy and sacrifice: Somme, Passchendaele, Dunkerque, Omaha Beach, and Bastogne. This one-hour armchair tour brings viewers to the sites of these great struggles and describes the events and their results. Signup required.
Speaker Bio: Robert Mueller caught the battlefield bug when, as a child, he visited Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Retirement brought him the opportunity to visit and study the battlefields of Europe.
He has written six visitor guides to the battlefields of Northern Europe under the Fields of War imprint which have garnered thirteen national book awards including being honored by the Military Writers Society of America. Mr. Mueller has also written comprehensive articles for WW II History Magazine and WW II Quarterly.
Mr. Mueller's one-hour-long programs combine period and contemporary photographs with clearly drawn maps to describe the places and the people who dictated the battle's outcome. He has delivered over 300 presentations across the metropolitan area to wide acclaim.
Robert Mueller holds advanced degrees in physics from the University of Illinois and in business administration from Lake Forest College. He performed his military service in the US Army Signal Corps during the Vietnam era. Mr. Mueller is a member of the Chicago Writers Association and the Military Writers Society of America.
