The First Folio was compiled by John Heminges and Henry Condell, two of Shakespeare’s fellow actors. Without it, we would not today have half of Shakespeare’s plays. Peter Garino will examine how the First Folio came to be, its importance to our knowledge and understanding of Shakespeare today, and how the Folio is used by actors today in crafting their performances. He also takes a look at Henry Clay Folger, who amassed a collection of 82 First Folios during his lifetime. Peter Garino also speaks on the Newberry Library’s holdings of a First Folio and Shakespeare Quartos. A must-see for Shakespeare aficionados or those who simply wish to broaden their understanding of Shakespeare.
Peter Garino is a founding member of The Shakespeare Project of Chicago and has served as Artistic Director since June 2010. He appeared as the Prince in The Project’s theatrical reading of Romeo and Juliet and as Polonius in The Project's theatrical reading of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark this season. He also directed Richard III for The Project in January 2020. Peter has worked with the Steppenwolf and Organic Theatre companies, the Body Politic, Pegasus Players, the Oak Park Festival Theatre and Illinois Shakespeare Festival (three seasons). Peter attended the National Shakespeare Conservatory and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting from Illinois State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts from Hofstra University, New York.
