George Pullman, born in Brockton, New York in 1831, revolutionized rail travel through the company he created, the Pullman Palace Car Company. Historian Andrew Bullen, resident of Pullman, Illinois, has written extensively about George M. Pullman. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Bullen has undertaken projects for the Pullman House History Project and the Historic Pullman Foundation in Chicago.
Join Pullman historian and resident Andrew Bullen as he shares five "big" stories of Pullman – George Pullman and his family, the Company and its products, the town of Pullman, the people of Pullman, and labor and race issues. This presentation will weave these stories together to describe the fascinating history and encouraging future of this Chicago neighborhood and national monument, showing that the story of Pullman is the story of America. Speaker Bio: Andrew Bullen (http://www.andrewbullen.us/) has an AB from the University of Chicago (Philosophy) and an MS-LIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was employed as the Information Technology Coordinator for the Illinois State Library, but retired from that position in 2023. A Pullman resident and historian, he has written extensively about Pullman. He has been responsible for the development of a Pullman history website at http://www.pullman-museum.org, including the Pullman House History Project, a demographic database of 47,000 Pullman residents from 1883-1950. He has helped digitize some Pullman archives online (http://www.idaillinois.org/digital/collection/pshs/search/) and is currently working with the Historic Pullman Foundation to organize and update their archives. He has worked with ways to take images and metadata in digital asset management systems and weave them into comprehensive narratives, such as the one he did for the Scalar collection of "Pullman in the First World War" at http://www.finditillinois.org/scalar/pullman-in-the-first-world-war/index.
In addition to his work in Pullman, Bullen also works with optical musical recognition software on projects such as "The Music of the First World War" (http://www.idaillinois.org/digital/collection/p16614coll23/search/) and "The Masque of Illinois" (http://www.finditillinois.org/scalar/the-masque-of-illinois/index).
